Keto… why it is not the diet for you.

Written by: Angelica Guadalupe, Intern

You’ve probably heard of Keto, right? Your family, friends, coworkers, or maybe even yourself have tried it before. If you’ve never heard of it, let me explain. Keto is a low carb, high fat diet. The goal is to go into ketosis by consuming the smallest amount of carbs as possible. Yes, that means no more bread, muffins, soda, pasta, rice, and more. The Keto diet has been around for so long, and has been viewed in the most destructive ways, where many celebrities have promoted it and swore by it.

Did you know

The Keto diet was actually designed to ONLY help people who suffer from epilepsy. Besides that, there is no proof of this diet benefitting any other group. You may be thinking….

But I do know some people who have lost weight from going Keto..

Or

When I tried it I did feel healthier….

This may be true in your case, but that does not mean it is a healthy option at all or that it works long term. When someone loses weight, or maybe you lost some weight, your instinctive thought is that the individual is becoming healthier! Let’s take a moment to remember that weight loss does not equal health.

Do you suffer from epilepsy? Chances are, you do not, so there is no point in starting Keto! Do you take stomach ache medication when you have a headache? Of course not! That is exactly what you’re doing if you start Keto when you’re not epileptic.

95% of diets do not work long-term, and even if they seem like they are, just about every person gains the weight back, or winds up eating carbs again. Why? Because all Keto is, is restriction.

Restriction can be a form of disordered eating, and will only wind up making your relationship with food and your body worse.

This is what you will face when starting Keto:

●      Fatigue/Irritability

●      Lack of nutrients/Lack of variety

●      No long-term solution

●      Lack of fiber

Now I know with the new year right around the corner, many of you may be struggling, but a new diet for the new year is not the answer! You have worked way too hard to go backwards, and treat your body with disrespect! A long term solution would be making sure you don’t restrict anymore, not talking negatively to yourself, and working on your relationship with food instead of destroying it further!
