Social Media Detox

Written by: Angelica Guadalupe, Intern

Hey you, yes you. Can you take 5 minutes out of your day for me? I want you to scroll through your Instagram, Facebook, or whatever social media you use most. What do you see? Is it friends, family, quotes, dogs, things you like? Or is it mostly fitness accounts, “health” food posts, and weight loss accounts?

Don’t be ashamed if it's more fitness and weight loss based. I’ve been there too. They may be telling you to cut out carbs, and substitute your sandwich bread for bell peppers...and maybe you’ve even tried it! Maybe you enjoyed it, maybe you didn’t. But the reason for why you tried it is the problem. Did you try it to lose weight? If the answer is yes, it is time for a social media detox.

When you scroll through your feed, do you feel happy or do you feel exhausted and drained? You view each post, and think you’re doing something wrong, or you may feel like you’re not good enough. The problem is not you! It’s your feed and the way it has altered your mindset.

I challenge you to go through your following, and unfollow anyone who doesn’t make you happy. Yes, anyone! That includes friends, family, influencers, etc. Follow new people who support your goals and ambitions. Follow accounts that make you feel like ALL bodies are good bodies.

After you complete this challenge, scroll through your feed once more. How do you feel now? You should feel relief, support, and motivation. You may scroll through your social media 10 times a day, or 10 times a week, but that’s still enough to affect your mood. Start your social media detox today, and you will feel so much more positivity throughout your day.
