The comparison game

Written by: Angelica Guadalupe, Intern

Hey, you! Are you comparing yourself again? You’re with a group of friends, or you’re walking around the store and can’t help but compare yourself to every person who walks by. Maybe you compare yourself to all the celebrities you follow and the glamorous lives they live.

I am here to tell you, that these people you are comparing yourself to, are probably comparing themselves to someone else. It is a vicious cycle that normally follows having a negative relationship with food and your body.

Many times, what you’re comparing yourself to is someone else’s body, house, lifestyle, relationships, money, etc. All of these things can be shown, but what you cannot see is behind the scenes. Just like you, these people have things going on inside.

Things you can do to stop comparing yourself right now:

●      Avoid your triggers. Unfollow/unfriend anyone who makes you feel like you are not enough.

●      Of course, affirmations!! Repeat affirmations to yourself every day to improve your relationship with yourself.

●      Ask yourself, “Why do I want what they have?” If it’s a negative answer, chances are this comes from a place of insecurity (We ALL get insecure, but it’s good to acknowledge it when it happens).

●      Remember that people only show what they want to show. Again, behind the scenes may look completely different.

●      Know that just because someone else has a mansion, new car, lost weight, or made a fancy meal, doesn’t mean that whatever you have in the moment is not valid. You ARE valid.

We all live different lives. It is normal to compare. But is their life better than yours? Absolutely not!! You may look at someone and think “I wish I had her tiny waist” while they look at you and think “I wish I had her curves.” This self acceptance journey is not an easy one, but it is possible. Just like anything, it takes a lot of practice and patience with yourself. Once you know you are worthy, comparison will not be something that takes over your life.
